Will work for PC/DOS 3.2 + (Maybe 3.1)
SET80 can be used to change the default drive parameters for the disk drives
on a PC/DOS machine. The default drive parameters are used by DOS formating a
disk. The rest of the time, the BPB (Bios Parameter Block) is read from the
first sector on the disk, and used to build the current drive parameters.
What use is it??
1) If you have a 3.5" drive configured as your B drive, and are running
PC/DOS 3.3 then you can use it to tell DOS that the drive has 80 tracks.
The alternative is to create a new logical drive using DRIVER.SYS. Earlier
versions allowed you to change the defaults by using the DRIVPARMS entry
in config.sys.
SET80 changes the entries for drive B so that it assumes 80 tracks on this
drive. This sets the B drive up for Quad density 5.25" drives, or 3.5 inch
drives. Both programs set up the formatting so that the disks are formatted
with a sector skew of 2. The normal sector skew for PC/DOS is 6. This
shouldn't cause any problems, but if you find that your IO is taking longer
than you expect, then just change the sector table in the program accordingly.
Documentation for the IOCTL call used may be found in the TECH REF Manual
3.1 (I believe.. certainly 3.2) or later. Forget either Norton, or the "NEW"
MSDOS book from Microsoft press.
